Medieval illumination

A few years ago, while looking for a calligraphy workshop on the Internet, I discovered a manuscript illumination workshops site… The one offered in Toulouse was particularly attractive because one of my daughters lives there. What an opportunity! So I registered for a 5-day workshop organised by Claire Travers

On a beautiful morning in August 2004, I arrived at Claire’s with my tiny paint brushes made of marten hair (as requested), my champagne bottle corks (really? what was I going to use those for????) not knowing at all what to expect... After all, I did not know how to draw, hadn’t painted for decades (since school…and that goes back…way back…), and, well, the word illumination, was only a faint concept, glimpses of a few pictures of illuminated manuscripts, but that was it.
This workshop was a real “illumination” (pardon the pun) for me…All the circumstances melded into an aesthetic spider’s web that has “a-mazed” me since then. I take pleasure in repeating that “I fell into illumination and I just don’t want to get out of it anymore”.

As a committed devotee, each year sees me returning for another 5-day workshop and every time it’s a new challenge, a new discovery, a new learning experience that I pursue at home on weekends and during my holidays…
